Today we’re really excited to present you to our very first contest on the Starbound forums!
All you need to enter is to put on your creative thinking hat and start designing a monster for the game, if you win not only will we be making it appear in the Starbound universe to wreak havoc on unknowing travellers across the stars, but also you’ll get the chance to win a free copy of the game!
So stop by the contest thread here, read through the rules and get to work!
Remember that you’re only allowed one submission – so feel free to add as much detail as you want or maybe illustrate it with a picture, the contest will be open until the 19th of march!

What should i make my monster on? (I mean program like paint or something).
this is a boss idea. it is a giant wisp in one form and sort of space massive worm which consumes planets and the only way to stop it from consuming a planet you claimed or are on is to fight it and drive it away for now. you will get a message if the giant beast is near a planet of yours so you can take on the beast. its name will be devourer of the stars or star devourer if you so please. i have a rough drawing of this beast/boss
here is my idea. (it has a planet to XD) it’s callde the hungering sea, and it has 4-5 stages. when you enter the water it looks normal no biggy light blue color yadda yadda. then waves begin after a certain amount of time, these do knockback but no damage. then receding waves pull you in after awhile (these again deal no damage.) the next stage invaolves a large sized wave with a mouth in the front, this is what happens if youu stay in the water to long. then finally a stunami sized wave (goes to top of screen) comes in with a leviathin like creature underneath it. it will send large pushing and pulling waves in random patterns. it would be on a planet with underwater reaserch facilitys and very few islands in the water. (maybe the underwater boss could be diffrent?) here is a (poorly drawn) image of my idea. also included is a scientist feild notes that may be found in a ruined reasearch facility. it is waterlogged and bloodied from the dismembered hand still clutching it. i will start a post with exact details later.

This is supposed to look like a dogs head with 4 sets of ears, wings and a tail. It definetly wasn´t my original intention to draw this, but finally this was the result.
I have absolutely no idea what to name it and I don´t think I ever can decide this. But for the moment I shall call it Lucipus
Ok I have an idea its another boss idea but this one is a mechanical dragon that shoot explosive fie balls but one you defeat it youll wil be able to controll it but this i an end of world boss that is extremly rare so you wont be able to get i that easly…..oh i know thi may soundgreeedy but there are two of us that came up with this idea so dould we have two lots of prizes… its me (beta2000) and my steam name is beta20001 and the other person’s username for steam is neil.i.jeffery and his username for this webstie is Neil Jeffery.

Terraria was fun but eventually got really repetitive and boring when i played i was maxed in just a couple of hours. This game looks like a much larger area of exploration with more features and all I’ve seen is the snapshots and lighting video. And if the people who created Terraria are fucking idiots then that means your a fucking idiot for buying and enjoying a game created by fucking idiots. So go complain to people who care instead of on a creative thinking contest forum.

My first idea was an bomb-dropping hot-air-baloon… until i realised that it´s not a monster :P So I made this bomb-dropping slug “guy” instead.
It´s airborne by its vultures so killing the vultures makes him fall to the ground, loosing health but not die. His only attack is throwing sludgebombs. The sludge is sticky and slows the player but the sludge itself doesn´t harm the you. However, the impact of the explosion is quiet deadly.

Me and beta 2000 have designed one attack for our dragon it will shoot eletrical bolts tht explode on impact to either player or land .
Also are dragon is going to be called Mechanoical fury. We are having so much fun developing our creature and wehope everyone else is as well . We have only the development team to thank and we wish everyone the best of luck !
My enemy is a space ship! It will randomly appear while flying in space.I’m not the best pixel artist.
Wow, this is a tough one… how about an enemy that can be found everywhere but have a low-ish spawn rate and that morphs? Maybe it will take on the look of the most common enemy within that “biome” but will have a distinct characteristic. Such as, I don’t know, bright blue eyes or a hat of some sort? But no matter what this is going to be an AWESOME game! Can’t wait!!!
So i was thinking this was like mob or enemy that wood be called a “Ghost Ninja/Samurai” and he would be like a boss of some sort. He would be able to resurrect a like 10 ghost ninjas that would fight for him until you defeat them , then you would fight him. He is able to kind of go through walls/floor since he’s a ghost or teleport. He uses his sword to attack and also throws shurikens at you. When defeated he gives you his sword cause hes still honorable. SOOOOOO I hope that you or anyone else likes my idea and thanks for your time :)

a Pretty Big Glop
It has multible forms (or stages).
It is invincible in the original form, when it has taken enough damage, it wil split up in two globs that are in stage 2.
In stage 2 the Glops will try to become stage 1 again by trying to touch, but since they are slow moving (and thinking) the player can split ‘em up to stage 3, OR block the path and the split ‘em.
In stage 3 the slimes have realized they are loosing, and turn on their only defense: Toxic gloo. The stage 3 Glops will emit an aura of light and make a trail of glowing goo (see picture 4) The goo and the Glops will, when touched by the player, stick to the player and slowly damage him for 4-5 seconds. the stage 3 Glops won’t have alot of HP but when killed they will explode and spread goo on blocks in a 4-5 block radius.
The Goo spread by stage 3 Blops will vanish after 20-30 seconds.

My Idea is Is called Omega Slime, and feel free to change the name. It’s 4 arms give it extreme power, and Its gelatinous form leaves slime piles. Also feel free to do what you want with it. :D

I have an idea for a monster (whose name will be cyborg lizard atm because I am not a clever man) of a cyborg lizard, whom has 1/2 of his body of a robot. He hunches and walks rather at a slow-average rate, but his fist is powerful and strong. They dwell in damp swamplands or humid jungle habitats, but can also be found where other aliens may dwell, as they are cowardly and often seek out groups. Attack> swinging fist Defend> Arm or tail.
(Please don’t judge the entry on my drawings, I apologize if it gives you cancer.)
There are more than one aliens.The Aliens randomly appear while your on a planet.A UFO will appear in the sky and you need to destroy a spaceship.PS:It matters what type of planet your on for them to come to the planet.

Subterian Worm. Idea is to place sandpits that the avatar either jumps over or goes under. If it jumps over and a worm is in it, it attacks them in the air and pulls them under, otherwise you fall into the pit and jump on its head to keep moving. If its a pit you have to jump over otherwise it’ll suck you in and drain your health. It could also be an empty cave that has a treasure chest in it or something.
ok Beta2000 here now i am here to inform that we havent posted as many DAILY updates its jst because we had spent most of our weekend coming up with ideas but we will post about 2 more updates one of them will be about the dragon itself such as the battle after that battle and stuff like that… Ok the other update will be about how it looks and we will atach a picture to it si you all know what it looks like.

Why not have a monster that’s the reverse of a slime? As it encounters more of it’s own kind (and there could be a higher possibility to spawn them in particular areas), it adds them to its mass and changes shape and ability. Like it begins as a normal slime type monster. +1 more slime and it acts like a slinky and has greater attack. +2 slimes, it’s a winged slime with more speed and a slightly lower attack. +3 slimes, it’s a lumbering monster that can span small chasms/gaps. +4 slimes, it’s a humanoid slime that can toss fast projectiles, etc. etc. etc. Could be a lot of fun to make the different states.

entry name- Tree Dragon
apperence- Tree with mouth, eyes, and legs.
habitat- Forests.
attacks- Breaths a poisness gas (almost like fire) at the enemy (the player) if it gets close enough.
weekness- Most long ranged attacks.
strong against- Most close ranged attacks.
abilities- Due to the fact it is a tree it takes little knock back. It also hides itself umong other trees to blend in and suprise pray.
drops- Wood, poisin, tree dragon egg (optional)
insperation- The mimic and the fact of how scary would it be if you were walking along and a tree attacks you.
back story- The tree dragon was at one point a now extinct species of dragon called the morph dragon that could fuse its body with alomost any living thing. saddly most morph dragons were killed off bucasue they were the food of 99.9999999994% of most living creatures. the last morph dragons decided to fuse with trees for protection but the trees rough bark made it so they could never get out again, thus the tree dragon was born.
fun facts- When the tree dragon attacks its eyes turn red, no one knows why but most scientists believe it is because the tree dragon remembering the good old days when it was a dragon.
note to juges- If you pick mine (and please do i worked forever on that back story :D) you dont have to make it look like my “beautiful” picture just make it look like the trees in the game. Also i thought it would be a cool sidequest to capture a tree dragon and try to take the morph dragon out of it, thus saving the species

I drew this a while ago but I feel it belongs in a game like this. I did art in yr 12 and I have always drawn these types of things. I think this should be found on beaches and underwater. Even in swamps.

This here is a Fume’er, its normally a nonviolent creature but emits a poisonous gas from the air sacs on its neck that expand and retract. When threatened it digs underground where it fills the newly dug hole with gas.
I don’t know about the pic, but the idea is the best on here in my opinion. Good job, I hope they pick it would be fun!

Ok this is a weird cloaked sort of metroid type monster in a swamp planet with 2 suns
that thing in the sky is a cloud and to the left is a weird swamp tree

Idea-A tamable/can be agressive pet! There can be 3 kinds-Dragons,Hedghogs, and Elemental animals(Lunar horse, shadow wolf, ect.) Dragons are only agresive when in phase 2/grown up but can be tamed when a baby.
dragons have assits and attack in combat.Water dragons give bubbles for air,Fire dragons give you fire based attacks, and plant dragons heal you.Though to taim dragons you need something of thier element
(Ice=Water Dragon Lava=Fire Dragon Colorful Flower=Plant Dragon) Hedghogs increase defense of certain elements depending on age and color. Lastly elemental animals get taimed the same as dragons but only attack and grant a duel special move which the player and pet can do to deal damage in a specific way
(Lunar horse special is Cresential Strike(Falling Blow) Shadow wolf special is Dark Mist(Foes/Enemies dont see you) etc.) Also you can name pets when tammed!
How about an enemy sluggish, slimish thing that when you think you kill it and walk away, it comes back to life as 2 or 3 smaller ones? I think I might add a picture later…
There is the image as I said and a small little list of what this monster does. It can be added to one of the ones that hurt you when you touch it and also, the large and medium one can do the attack animation to do more damage. It bypasses the whole shield system. The large one has a 1/1000 chance to take ONE item away. The size goes right to left. the last one to the left is the carcass which you dont have to include. Finally to understand the size, the main character’s (you) feet are about the same length (not height) as the carcass.
Oh and I forgot to mention that if it takes one of your items away, you can get it back by killing the huge one. It can end up either getting enchanced or cursed or whatever you want to call it. Hope to see it ingame!!!

a rare big dragon boss-type thing called ye olde dan the dragon what can drop an egg if you care for it for a long time you get a baby dragon what can grow up to be a ride-able dragon but it takes VERY long also it can fight for you like raxox the fox said.

I really like this picture! Maybe it’d have bubbles that escape from its mouth, big enough to ride (but obviously dangerous since they’ll pop eventually)… And his attack would be lightning fast in contrast with his very sedated look. You know, a quick “Wacha!” with his fist! Bam! Kapow! Yeah!

Hi guys my idea is called the shade
Shades are strange craetures, ripped between 2 dimensions and cannot fully manifest themselves in a single dimension. They are hooded figures that depending on where and when they are they are either transperent or have a slightly darker figure. They cannot appear at day because the sunrays burn thorugh there form but at night they can be found rarely wandering outside.They will tend to hang around in areas where to fabric of the reality is weaker because it is easier for them to materialise there. When they notice you they will freeze and then fly towards you with there claws outstrethed. When killed they drop dark matter.
The monster who I’ll show to you is a mix of a pig and a sea horse.
His French name, because I’m French, is the Hippochon.
It’s a creature who lives in the sea.

My creature is a penguin from the future, it has a laser gun and some kind of futuristic visor :P and he has a jetpack but you can get rid of that if you want.
Fira:
The power of a Fira is fire.
A Fira has a fireball its very powerfull if you get hit by the fireball you will be on fire.
Fira is small, its fast and it gives light in the dark ~

My idea was the monster should be a flying snake. Its colour would be an electric blue. And it would be a cute little snake with little wings, but when you attack it it grows into a HUGE mutant squid snake thing. They travel in packs. Oh I forgot to add that they summon poison balls and throws it at you, though the poison doesn’t do much damage.Also it has a tentacle that swings at you.It has fangs with a little blood on it. It can transform into anything. I wouldn’t mess with it if I were you. It says monster but mine’s kinda like a boss. I don’t know the damage but it doesn’t do much damage.It can do a lot of damage because of its four arms. It’s also stronger in the water.It likes to eat penguins so if there are none of them around you know the Octake (Octake is its name.) is close. If you kill it it drops a skin.Blue of course. It make good decoration. You can hang it up on the wall of whatever. It’s easy to kill, it has about 100 hp. Oh its wings dissolve in its second form. This was a last second submission. Though it took about an hour of thought, It was hard to think of a creature people haven’t thought of yet. If there’s a place where it has bad commas it’s because I’m young and still learning.Looking forward to the game. Best luck to all the other people trying. Finally everyone i present to you are creature mechanical fury.
This particular post will be about his stats what u can do with him his back story a nd much more so i hope u enjoy.
Attack and movement pattern.
He shoots 3 electrical balls of energy as one attack and one super powerful energ ball when he is on life.
He shoots lazer bullets from a lazer cannon mounted on his back , the speed in which he shoots varies.
While attacking he will be swooping down towards the player for and increase to the damage that his attacks do.
His movement pattern varies depending on how much health he has when he is at high health the rockets on his wings allow him to travel high into the sky when low on health he will be lower in the sky.
After Defeat.
Once defeated Mechanical Fury will teleport back to your base.
After a sertain period of time you will be able to use and ride him you will be able to to this once notified by an NPC.
After this you will be able to do such things as re name him and ride him.
Upgrading.
You will be able to upgrade mechanical Fury through parts that can be obtained by doing quests.
Back story.
Mechanical
fury was once a servant of the galaxy until one day his programming
system malfunctioned he went on to destroy many planets until he
finally found one to shape into his own planet that would be able to
destroy other worlds . It was luckily destroyed by a band of rebels
against his forces and he was forced on to an unknown planet where
his fury and hatred for the rest of the universe still remains even
after hundreds of years.
I really hope that you like our creature and see its potential we ourselves have worked really hard to develop our idea and although are artwork may not be great we hope that you will chose this for the idea. We also hope that you would be so kind as two give us two lots of prizes since this was a collaboration between me and beta2000 we very much hope this is possible because we really dont want won of us to miss out and as a reminder are steam account names are cypher761 and beta2000 if you would do this for us that would be awesome.All that remains for me to say is thankyou for setting up a brilliant competition we have had so much fun playing around and adding to our ideas. this is my monster, it flies around in caves and all near light sources goes out when it gets close. the only light comes from the monsters torch. it damages when u touch it and with its machine guns that only fire downwards.
the weak spot is the bubble thing.

Well, my entry is some mechanical dinosaur. He fly! Right on the balloon! He has some turbo-jet at the bottom of his feet, so he can control himself in the air. The little rocket thingy on his tail is to blast people away, leaving firework that will result. Blindness, so he can escape. The thing on his head is some kind of gun, he and shoot people with his head. If the balloon get hits, he will fall down and become ground becoming more easy to capture him or kill him. His behavior is like, a run away bot, shooting anything it see.
I don’t have any colouring pencil, so I leave it black and white. So I hope you don’t really mind!

A Propeller Snail With Gun
I hope im not too late, but my monster idea would be a Dead space explorer, it would have random body parts gone. Just an idea not entering the contest.
I was going “Hey! I can enter this contest”
then I saw all the awesome submissions, then I went “…. ffff…. These submissions are too good!”
There are a lot of submissions I would rather see entered than anything I could come up with, things like Virorbs.
Which leaves the question… Do you guys have to select only ONE monster? :(

i know this is an insanely long post and will force of anyone to read it but ill post a drawing later its like late >.<
For my monster idea I went to nature for inspiration. This is the Tarsier. In some cultures they are believed to be bad luck. So my idea is that this monster would just sit in a spot with it’s huge eyes trolling. Because when their on screen double the amount of enemies will spawn. I am not much of an artist but this is what the look like, but in my vision it is larger, with exaggerated eyes, more monkey like, and larger than they really are

Grass-flipper dude-thing…
So, normally you can’t see it, except a bit of purple or whatever color its legs are.
But… when you step on it, up in the air you fly as it springs its legs up! Ahh! Wha-hey, at least it’s a good view up here… well, I’m flying back down…Wait, oh crap! It turned on its back, and that vicious chomper is ready to snap at me as I land! Oh the agony!
…*ahem* Anyway, that’s a-my idea. Maybe you can tame them too, and can set the “spring-i-ness” to reach different altitudes (within reason) …I guess they would be pretty much stationary at all times for you, unless you move them yourself? I don’t know…
Regardless if I can still actually submit this, I just wanted to share it. I thought it was kinda cool, anyway…
Oh…also, as you’re falling back down from the initial spring, the creature will follow you on it’s back, so it can take a bite at you even if you move left or right. If you time it right with that new shield system, you’d block as it chomps, and then you could critical hit right after… If my understanding of that system is correct, anyway. I just like the idea of taming a few and having a jump pad back to base XD
Here’s a better pic. It’s nothing compared to some of the in-depth ideas, but I wouldn’t mind it showing up somewhere…

mine is called a grontos it is so powerful you can only kill it with grontos weaponry that can only be found in grontos villages in grontos chests. it does 100 damage to 350 damage. it has 2.5% cahnce of dropping a grontos battle ax.lives o planet varhara.
