Hello and welcome to the official Starbound devblog! Here, we’ll be giving you the inside scoop on our own special brand of indie game development. We’re going to be using this as a space to share the trials, tribulations, and ultimate thrill of creating our very own game with other gamers from around the world. You’ll hear the ups and the downs from our coders and artists, as well myself.

Hi there! This game looks awesome, but I have a specific question. The space game element — i.e. space shuttle and space station — is that fleshed out as well, wherein you can fly around and/or control them directly, or is the game more focused on planetary exploration?
When can we buy it? I’ll be buying 4 copies at least!

will the game have a space exploration component, I E searching for newly generated planets in an infinite (or close to) world? also it would be awsome if different planets had different things you would need to survive in before you go there.reason to grind = exploring for more good loot. another reason, dont die. also, will there be hardcore mode? preferablly with a highscore system based on how many planets you’ve “concored.” and if it doesnt have these, consider these as “idea-springboards” for you to use ;)

I’m loving this game already! I have a question though!
I was reading the About, and it says “Not only is the terrain of the planet procedurally generated, but the weather, the gravity, the difficulty level, the planet life [...]“
And this makes me curious about difficulties. If I were to travel to planet A, the difficulty could be easy, and then go to Planet B could the difficulty may be too hard for me at that point? I would really love to see sporadic difficulties like that. I am sure it may bother others, but would add more to the game (so long as you don’t have to clear planet b to get to c, but since it’s sandbox I assume this doesn’t apply to this situation) and make it more enjoyable!
From what I’ve read about the game, it sounds like it’ll end up taking a whole lot of my time! I love sandbox games, I love being able to look at every item/creature/plant, and I love the graphics!
I’m also curious if there will be space exploration, as someone also asked! Would be great, but I’m pretty damn stoked with the planet exploration at this point. Infinite amount of planets yes?!

Will i be able to change any planet’s terrain or only one?

I would buy this, the description and art has me hooked :) don’t let us down.
Quite an interesting concept. I always flew around in spore documenting the plants and creatures on certain planets just for that immersive feel. Something like this would be really great for playing in-character, definitely looking forward to it!
Space-themed Terraria+..? God I hope so. Having put 500+ hours into Terraria (and still counting) I will pay literally ANY amount of money for this game. Can I pre-order an 8-pack?

This game seems like it could be the game I was holding out for.
Many space themed games are just rts strategy games, which aren’t really my thing.
I longed for a game that took parts of The Sims (the people/crew aspect), Spore (the creative alien/developing/exploring aspect), Mass Effect (the space community vibe, diverse aliens) and now that I think of it, a little bit of Terraria and rolled it into one game.
This could be that game and it’s exciting.

I believe that people dislike steam because one it isn’t available world wide, two because you can’t (or it is difficult) to play offline and three (most likely) its much harder to steal.
Yeah, I see no reasoning going on around here, so I’ll go ahead and assume the path that will most likely piss off the people that really DO want to purchase the game.

I doubt anyone gives a damn about someone with such detail as that.
Terraria is distributed exclusively on Steam AFAIK, and it has been pirated anyway.
If they want to put it on Steam, I don’t mind, so long as there is a native Linux version somewhere.
It will probably be steam exclusive again. It’s not a big deal unless you completely CANT use steam, also, not sure if this one will be compatible with MAC, so if thats the reason you hate steam, then you have no idea what you’re talking about. Because in reality, if you have a MAC, and it releases outside of steam, you STILL cant play it, because its not MAC compatible.
(There are MAC wrappers that let you play terraria, but dont expect them for at least 5-7 months for starbound.)
Put it on steam and have TotalBiscuit hype the crap out of it.

o_o Idk if you would actually consider this but… I’m an amateur game designer. I write storylines and quests and main game content and stuff like that. I’ve been doing this since I was 11 years old… I’m 15 now. I have all sorts of ideas bundled up inside me! Give me a chance… thats all I ask. You don’t have too pay me.. unless you want to XD Im just kidding idc about money.. but yea please, if you give me a chance I will be grateful o_o… this is my dream guys, I want to go to college for game design D: and maybe after doing this I could get a good word out for me, and plus this game looks pretty cool! Kinda sad that Terraria is no longer redigit’s problem but thats besides the point. Please. all that I ask.
actually “contact” them if this is important to you. They themselves dont read these. They have a person skim over this for them so they can say “I saw many of you requested this and that in game, well, we listened” its what all game companies do.
That all aside, I’m not dissing this game or its company, its just how video game politics work. I cant wait for this game. I played Terraria to death, and I know I’ll do the same here. I would say a fair estimate on pricing will be 20-25 dollars. Considering how successful the first one was selling millions of copies. The fan base is here, so raising the price for more feautures is reasonable.
A lot of people claim that Terraria’s only reason for success was its 10 dollar price tag. This couldnt be further from the truth. The fact is people LOVE block games, period. There are lot of minecraft-ish games out there and no matter how bad they are… They have ALL sold hundreds of thousands of copies each. We as humans like to make something out of nothing, and thats what these game let us do. They let us build, destroy, hunt, and craft. The essense of survival, and our instincts.
Keep up the good work guys, you let us live the lives our ancestors did. Minus all the non natural enemies in the game of course. I doubt our ancestors fought Giant Eyeballs or Skeleton dungeon gate keepers.

Some people don’t like Steam. I think it should be a free-standing game, with the option to play in the Steam community.
pixels+sandbox+story+missions+weaponry+rideables+armor+(probably vanity)+space+space journal/log+ weather changers+looping worlds+each world being different+SPACE HOBOS!=Starbound=potential indie game of the year!

Hmm. Well, I’m sure you have some kinds of boss enemies, but what about Eldritch Abominations / cosmic horrors? Colossal space beings that provide some of the biggest challenges? Superbosses like that are generally something I personally enjoy, as well as the satisfaction of beating them.
Of course, the only cosmic horror I can think of at the moment is Phantoon from the Metroid series, but DAYUM it was a pretty intense battle in Other M…
Anyway, my suggestion- cosmic horrors. Make up your own, use existing ones, whatever. I just think it’d be pretty great.

How will co-op/multiplayer be integrated in this game?
As my username suggests, I am a huge terraria fan! I have some ideas. For one, what about mount customization? Just changing the looks, not speed or capabilities anything like that. I was also thinking you could add a weapon that shoots a blue laser that lasts for about two seconds and looks like a small, black rod with three metal pieces arcing at the end that all point at the same place, so it’s like the laser quickly builds up there and fires. Maybe it’ll be hard to get it to look good but small, but I like to share my ideas.

Well, I am sure that like me, almost everyone here is a fellow Terrarian. The game looks awesome so far but I look forward to some real views of what the game has to offer. Hopefully we can get a beta/demo to play with sometime. Please do not rush this game. Take your time and get it to were you think it’s perfect no matter how much you are pressured by the fans.

I would like to state for the record that this game already sounds about ten times more awesome than Terraria, which is REALLY saying something, it sounds, honestly, like Terraria in space, with more stuff, and more places to go, more things to do, vehicles, and other such awesomeness. If you had a preorder button, even if you set it to like, twenty bucks, and set a ‘Special Edition’ for twice as much, I would probably be willing to pre-order the special edition, just to know I was getting the maximum awesome. Also, I would like to suggest that you do set up some kind of pre-order, and those who pre-order get access to the first playable Alpha version, and the beta, as that would be really awesome, and be a good way to help you fund you game. Just saying. Love this game already, just from the concept art.

Wow, what’s with the Steam hate? Just kindly ask the developers to release it on Steam and release it on their website where you can buy it without Steam.

I want this on steam. Now.
I think they should release it on steam in my opinion. If they release it as a free standing game people will find ways to crack the game and then like terraria play the cracked version with multiplayer and on any server. If they make it so you can play multiplayer only through steam, the game will be more like garry’s mod when cracked because you can only play single player and not multiplayer and this will reduce the chance’s of people making hacks for Starbounds but will also improve the community by only having legit people in the community. Sorry if some of the stuff i said did not make sense.
