Introducing the Apex

For millenia the Apex were close to human in appearance until breakthrough research into accelerated evolution lead to the creation of the “Vestigi-Evo Process”. The VEP allowed the Apex to trade physical devolution for intellectual evolution.
The Apex operate under a collectivist regime controlled by the Miniknog (The Ministry of Scientific Progression). Each Apex dedicates his life to the survival and progression of the Apex as a whole. The nature of this regime allowed the VEP to be administered species wide in less than 10 years.
The most honored members of Apex society are those chosen by the MiniKnog to donate their bodies to furthering the VEP. Those chosen for the experimentation process are rarely seen again, but their names are said to be inscribed on the wall of the chosen which sits deep within the Ministry.
For a time the MiniKnog received criticism from several prominent Apex for what appeared to be a bias towards selecting only the poorest in society to be members of the chosen. This criticism was silenced however when the critics themselves were selected.
There are whispers of a rebel group ready to denounce the MiniKnog and lead the Apex into revolution. But in Apex society discussion of dissension is punishable by death.

One thing i really love about this is that they are all really quite different. In the screenshot shown a few months ago, the monkey didnt look particularly nice to play as (quite ugly) but in this image we see one that looks like one of those cute mokeys from the Bloons TD series, a darker one with long hair and even one that looks like a freaking yeti! I will definately be playing a world/save of each of the current races :D

Also, I like the “OBEY” posters that ref Andre the Giant graffiti. I’m loving the acid-looking stuff, the jungle trees out the window, and how the room resembles a Portal test chamber. This is going to be the best game. Of interest to grammarians, although “Apex” could just be “Ape with an x…” the actual word “apex” could be defined as the highest point, signifying this intellectually elite race. It could easily playoff of something else though, SA-X of Metroid Fusion for example. Keep up the stunning work!

I actually didn’t realize this was the ape race until the physical devolution idea (really neat, by the way!) Keep up the awesome work! P.S. Can other races gain VEP later in the game? I guess this would take a lot of work but it would be neat to see an Avian undergo the process and devolve into some pterodactyl while gaining new ideas about advanced weaponry.
The cool thing is, while physically “devolved”, it actually means they are apes/monkeys which are either more nimble or stronger than normal humans, so they can still be warriors or similar.
I kind of doubt that whatever race you choose will have specific stats. It’s not looking to be one of those types of games, the choice of race being for cosmetics is what I am willing to bet on. Though that is yet to be seen. I think the whole devolved bit is poking at DC Marvel and one of their villains that is an ape which devolves humans for his own beliefs that apes are smarter. I’m not a DC Marvel fan, but I did play Online for a while, and the villain’s name is Gorilla Grodd.

Saying they’re devolved kind of relies on that old backward notion of Aristotle’s ladder where Caucasians are the top and everything else goes down the rungs- African, ape, monkey, mouse, frog, fish, etc.
If you just rapidly enhanced the brains of chimps toward the human sort of brain (and apparently gave them the upright spine and longer legs,) then you’d get the super strong sort of genius apes- but with my sciencey background and the way it’s written it is more like they are morphing them into humans and then reversing the process for the face (mouth juts out for the bigger teeth,) and body hair thickness.
I’m not sure if it’s supposed to, but the VEP reminds me of the FEV from Fallout.
That whole “furthering the VEP” thing sounds a bit ominous . I like it :D

They are all unlocked at the beggining of the game. You can be whatever you want from the first moments.

The fluid above the trap door is probably acid, but it also looks like the fluid in the test tubes.
So, things can’t devolve… they can only evolve to suit their environment…. What it looks like they did is genetic engineering to make themselves stronger (primate physical body) and smarter (faster firing neurons/more densely packed neurons). Which looks like a win-win to me. =)

Secondly: Look at the Bottom-Middle part of the Pic… is that Electricity I spot, meaning we can have Electric Traps & the like in-game!?! WOOOOT!!! ^_^

Long time watcher of Starbound. First time poster. I just wanted to say that it is a travesty that this game is not in my stomach being happily digested by billions of little protozoa. To the creators of Starbound: This may be one of the best games I have ever looked forward to.
i know this game is not finished, but i wish i could see perhaps a little 5 min machinima where the makers of starbound are cast and play a roll while showing off the game a little at the same time.

Hey, what are you guys suggesting, this is a GOOD game, it should not be floating around among the festering pit of raw sewage that is Greenlight.
Tiy, if you are reading this, it means you sincerely listen to your fans. It also means I have an idea that has run through mine and many starbounders’ minds, I would highly appreciate it if you would add this feature to the game if you haven’t already: Being able to befriend and or invade an Apex base and use the VEP to become an ape creature. You don’t have to be able to be one of the chosen if you don’t want, but I would love to be a chimpanzee person, roaming around the galaxy with a rocket launcher! If you add this, THANKS SO MUCH, IT MEANS A LOT! P.S. Sorry this message was so long, but I knew that if it was a short message in all caps, you would never read it. :)

This is a neat little back story of the race but less back story and more playable release lol I am dying to actually try the game out and see if it was as well executed as Terraria. Man I still wish Terraria wasn’t abandoned and was still being worked on as long as there was interest in the game like the developers originally stated. I hope these developers are much more committed to their projects.

What if the chosen are VEP’d into super-intelligent protozoa? That actually makes sense. It would be rather cool if you could find them (very rare) and get a bunch of tech or something.
