Friday Update: NPC Visual Dynamics.

In Starbound there will be many NPCs. Something unique about some of these NPCs is that they have many different dynamic appearances so they will rarely look the same twice. Lets take a look at my penguin as an example.
Penguins can be found throughout the galaxy. They can be of different species, have different modifications and be different colors. Some might be rarer than others. Others might give you special rewards. The combinations are quite numerous.
These are just a few of the possible combinations. Enjoy!
Please tell me the last pic isn’t of penguins!
More seriously, this is great work. Must be quite an effort animating everything.
It looks like it just layers certain things over other things.
Only the first picture is of penguins.

This is amazing, providing local flavor for the various planets will go a very long way towards making the universe feel -big-! The artwork I have seen so far in this game is beyond amazing, I’m proud that my seven year old is going to be able to play this and have this as part of his gaming heritage!

The second deer looks like absol but black.
I like that there would be a unlimited number of animals to collect; but having to stare at them for 5 minutes to figure out what they are or copied animals from another cartoon is kinda uncomfortable :
You could just take a look at them with the game’s logbook.
dont the players write about the animals in the logbook?
The About page mentions “recording your findings” in the logbook, but as far as mechanics go, the actual logbook entries appear to be generated by the game (or handwritten, perhaps, but this blog post implies that animals themselves are also procedurally generated).

Doesn’t seem like an entry a player would write, and there doesn’t appear to be a button to change it were it player-created.

No offense but I hope they don’t listen to you. While Terraria was fun for what it was, it lacked direction, variety, and content. I hope they they stray and innovate greatly.

Suggestion: allow us to make custom terrible penguin disguises so that we can blend into the wildlife.

Well you’ll be able to catch some and use them like pokemon, although I’m not sure if they’ll ‘learn’ moves, but they would definetely already have some. Also I’m hoping you’ll have a place in your homeworld where you can keep tame creatures that you catch. I want a poptop!

theres an unlimeted amount of types of pengiuns DID U READ THE THING
before you get mad at sombody on the internet think about the word unlimeted amount, that mean infinite, as no end ot the difrent types… it is limited by all the difrent sprites they make, and if the sprites get mixed randomly there will still be a finite number of combinations sure the amount of posible combinations can be huge but it will never be unlimeted/infinete.
I’m going to catch a penguin and name him “Linux”. =3
